Fish – no chips

Updated: Feb 22, 2022

Taking a trip round the Market in Funchal is an experience. I didn’t take as many images in the flower bit as I’d wanted, the smells were making me sneeze. Not so in the fish market which is just wonderful. So many varieties of fresh fish being filleted by men with huge angry looking knives – I think they could do it blindfolded they were so quick. The Espada, or black scabbardfish, is hugely popular in Madeira and quite rightly so. Traditionally served with bananas (yummy) or with a courgette and herb crust, (we had both in a lovely family run restaurant called L’Osteria) the flesh and flavour is fab. Here are a few images from the market anyway.
