Cruising the Caledonian Canal

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

It was my birthday treat - a small ship cruise along the Caledonian Canal from Inverness to Oban, taking in Loch Ness and Loch Oich along the way. We went with Hebrides Cruises on the Emma Jane, a small ship taking up to 10 passengers - there were only 7 of us so lots of space. The cabins are - compact and the bathroom even more so. That was the only downside to a lovely time apart from Sue having problems on the last day because of the motion of the ocean as soon as we got out of Corpach Lock and into Loch Linnhe at the Corran Narrows.

The dawn one particular morning on the canal was superb with lots of mist. We had a guide on board who took us on walks and one morning we were treated to some deer and several species of small birds. When we were anchored in Loch Oich we could see stags on the adjacent hillside and heard them bellowing. Even with my 100 - 400mm Fuji lens on the X-T3, they were too far away to do them justice.

We chose to fly with LoganAir from Manchester to Inverness rather than drive. The original plan had been to drive to Perthshire and stop overnight, then continue up to Inverness and spend another night and look around - it's years since I last visited. However, in the end the short flight felt more attractive.

Here's a few images from the trip - I hope you like them.
