River Rhine - (part 2)

Part 2 of the adventure starts with us leaving the very pretty town of Cochem, back up the Moselle towards German Corner (Koblenz) Frankfurt, Aschaffenburg and finally Mainz, before our flight home from Frankfurt. At least there'll be a Saga driver to take us back home. It's great being a Sagalout.

The first port of call was Koblenz and we moored right next to the German Corner. Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is a huge place opposite where we moored and there's a cable car across the Rhine to reach it's summit. Fortunately we had an early morning start and a slow walking tour around Koblenz to start with. We were accompanied by the best tour guide we've ever had the pleasure to meet, Heinz-Gert. He was very knowledgable, witty and all round good guy. We had a tour of Frankfurt led by the exact opposite. We went our own way. I didn't find Frankfurt a very appealing place, probably biased against it because of the airport experience. We then went to Aschaffenburg, visited the town and had beer. Went for a walk on our own as it seemed to be a very small town. We first walked up to Schoental, a quiet park area with a couple of lakes and lots of shade (it was 30+). Going down into the town we walked to the main feature which is the Johannisburg Palace. One of the towers is undergoing renovation work but I managed to get a decent enough image as we were leaving. The last port of call before our flight was Mainz. The whole weekend had been a holiday for a religous festival and it was frantic in Mainz. We couldn't get into the cathedral as there was a service and there were so many stalls I couldn't get a decent shot so I took one of the balloon seller instead. We had beer here as well! The journey back home was better than the one coming - mostly because we knew we'd be walking a long way so it wasn't a shock.
